About the Barossa Valley

The Barossa is about an hour's drive north-east of Adelaide, and Tourism Australia counts more than 150 wineries and 80 cellar doors across it. Join us in the valley where Joseph Seppelt bought his land in 1851 and where Chateau Tanunda's first vines went in in 1843. The Barossa takes in two wine regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, known above all for rich reds and fortified wines. We bring together the wine days from Adelaide and from inside the valley, and mark each with the tasting fees its fare includes. Start with the three below.

The Wineries

Seppeltsfield keeps a tawny from every vintage since 1878 and says it releases a 100 year old single vintage wine each year; its cellar door asks you to book, and tasting fees apply. Chateau Tanunda was established in 1890 in bluestone, on the site of the valley's first winery. Smaller family cellar doors such as Kies, Gibson and Rosenvale pour on the tour routes.

The Wine

Tourism Australia describes the Barossa's shiraz, grenache, mataro, cabernet sauvignon and semillon vines as the world's oldest continuously producing. Chateau Tanunda picks the warmer valley floor before the cooler Eden Valley each vintage. Each cellar door sets its own tasting fee, and many fares here pay it for you.

Beyond the Cellar Doors

The Barossa Farmers Market fills the Yalumba Vintners Shed in Angaston every Saturday morning. Maggie Beer's Farm Shop sits outside Nuriootpa, Mengler's Hill Lookout looks over the valley, and chocolate and cheese makers make good stops for anyone not drinking. The Barossa Vintage Festival returns from 21 to 25 April 2027.

Named Highlights of a Barossa Valley Visit

The places the tours are built around, from Seppeltsfield in the west to the market in Angaston.

Seppeltsfield

Joseph Seppelt bought land here in 1851. The estate keeps a tawny from every vintage since 1878 in its Centennial Collection, and twelve of its buildings are State Heritage listed.

The Avenue of Palms

More than 2,000 Canary Island date palms line about 5 km of Seppeltsfield Road, planted by estate workers during the Great Depression.

Chateau Tanunda

A bluestone winery established in 1890 on the site of the valley's first winery, where the first vineyards went in in 1843.

Maggie Beer's Farm Shop

The farm shop on Pheasant Farm Road outside Nuriootpa, a stop on shared days from Adelaide and on days that start from Barossa accommodation.

Mengler's Hill Lookout

A short lookout stop of five to ten minutes on the private days, before the cellar doors and lunch.

The Barossa Farmers Market

Every Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 in the historic Yalumba Vintners Shed, on the corner of Stockwell and Angaston roads in Angaston.

Everything You Need Before You Go

Each cellar door sets its own tasting fee, and Seppeltsfield asks you to book ahead. Most fares here pay the fees and lunch for you. The hop-on hop-off bus and the lunch-platter day leave the tastings to you, and the first chip on every card says which kind of fare it is.

The Barossa is about an hour's drive from Adelaide. LinkSA runs a bus to Gawler train station, which connects with the Adelaide Metro network, and its Keoride service is door-to-door inside the valley. A driver on a full licence must stay under 0.05, and a learner or provisional driver must not drink at all.

Plan the journey

The hop-on hop-off bus boards at Stamford Plaza, 150 North Terrace, at 9:30, and at the Barossa Visitor Centre in Tanunda at 10:50. Most other days from Adelaide collect you from your city or Glenelg hotel. The trike and the Mustang start in Nuriootpa, and the e-bike ride at the Yalumba cellar door in Angaston at 9:00.

Bureau of Meteorology averages for Nuriootpa give highs of 30.3 °C in January and 13.6 °C in July, with 467.8 mm of rain a year. Chateau Tanunda says vintage runs from February until April or May, and the Barossa Vintage Festival returns from 21 to 25 April 2027.

Do You Need a Tour for the Barossa Valley?

Not to visit one cellar door. There are no Barossa Valley tickets to buy: the region has no gate, and Barossa Valley ticket prices come down to two costs, the tour fare and the tasting fee each cellar door charges. If one of your party will drive and not drink, the valley is about an hour from Adelaide by road, and the Barossa Visitor Centre in Tanunda offers a free concierge service to help you plan.

What a tour adds is a driver who is not tasting. South Australia's limit is 0.05 on a full licence and zero on a learner or provisional one, and a day of tastings adds up. Most fares here also pay the tasting fees and lunch, and every card says which ones do.

Do you need a ticket to visit the Barossa Valley?
No. The Barossa is a wine region with no gate, so there is no ticket to buy. You pay a tour fare, and each cellar door charges its own tasting fee unless your fare already includes it.
How much do Barossa Valley wine tours cost?
From $72 for the hop-on hop-off bus, where tastings and lunch are extra. Day tours from Adelaide with tastings and lunch in the fare start at $113, and the eight-guest winemakers' day is $189. The trike and Mustang rides for two are $187 per person. Each card shows the current fare.
Which tours include the tasting fees?
Most guided days do, including the premium tasting day with chocolate, the winemakers' day, the Small Batch days and the Valley Wine Tours days. The hop-on hop-off bus and the Wine Diva small-group day leave the tastings to be paid at each venue, and the trike and Mustang listings do not say.
How far is the Barossa Valley from Adelaide?
About an hour's drive north-east of Adelaide. Tourism Australia gives the distance from Adelaide Airport as 76 km.
Can you do a day trip from Adelaide?
Yes. The day tours pick up in Adelaide city or Glenelg and run 7.5 to 9 hours, with about an hour on the road each way.
Is lunch included on the wine tours?
On most guided days, yes: a platter, a pub lunch or a multi-course restaurant lunch. The hop-on hop-off bus and the half-day trike and Mustang rides leave lunch out.
Do any tours start inside the valley?
Yes. The Valley Wine Tours days pick up from your Barossa accommodation, the trike and Mustang rides start in Nuriootpa, the e-bike tour meets at the Yalumba cellar door in Angaston, and the hop-on hop-off bus stops at the Barossa Visitor Centre in Tanunda.
What is the best wine tour for a first visit?
For a first day from Adelaide with everything paid, the premium tasting day with lunch and chocolate. For the lowest fare and your own pace, the hop-on hop-off bus. If you already know your wine, the eight-guest winemakers' day.
Are there private Barossa Valley wine tours?
Yes. There is a private day from Adelaide for two to six and a Barossa-based day for a group of up to four. The trike and 1966 Mustang rides are private for two.
Can children go on the wine tours?
Most wine days are for adults. The Mustang ride takes children from 8, the hop-on hop-off bus takes children with an adult, and the premium tasting day from Adelaide is not suitable for children under 5.
Can I cancel a wine tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts.
When is the best time to visit the Barossa Valley?
Tourism Australia rates autumn, March to May, the best: warm days and cool evenings. The average high at Nuriootpa is 30.3 °C in January and 13.6 °C in July, which has about ten rain days.
When is the next Barossa Vintage Festival?
The Barossa Vintage Festival runs from 21 to 25 April 2027. It is held every two years, with five days of long lunches, masterclasses, markets, parades and concerts.
Can you get to the Barossa Valley by public transport?
Partly. The Adelaide Metro train runs to Gawler, and a LinkSA bus connects Gawler with the valley. LinkSA also runs Keoride, a door-to-door service inside the valley.
Where is the visitor centre?
The Barossa Visitor Centre is at 66-68 Murray Street, Tanunda. It opens 9:00-17:00 on weekdays, 9:00-16:00 on Saturday, and 10:00-16:00 on Sunday and public holidays.
